A magnitude-5.6 earthquake has rattled central New Zealand.

According to GeoNet the quake, which occurred not long after 4pm on Monday, struck at a depth of 30km and caused strong shaking.

The epicentre of the quake was 30km south-west of Seddon, but GeoNet's 'felt' reports indicate it was felt all over the upper South Island and lower North Island.

Within 20 minutes, more than 15,000 people had recorded feeling the earthquake on the GeoNet website.
