Police have launched a homicide investigation after a man died following a serious assault in the small Bay of Plenty town of Tāneatua.

A 57-year-old man died in Waikato hospital on Tuesday after being the victim of an assault on Monday at around 2 pm.

According to a statement, police were at an address overnight in Cobham Street where a scene examination will continue today.

Police would like to hear from anyone with information that could assist the investigation.
