Weather: Aucklanders finally get relief from humidity as Cyclone Dovi abates

Aucklanders finally have some relief from days of high humidity as the cyclone that hit New Zealand's shores on Sunday abates.

MetService is predicting temperatures to be settled this week with many places expected to reach the mid-20s. Kaitaia (25C), Whangarei, Tauranga, Hamilton and Queenstown (24C) will be the hottest areas in the country on Tuesday.

"Not only do we have a largely fine week of weather to look forward to, departing Dovi also took the muggy tropical air with it so no more humid nights across the North Island," MetService meteorologist Rob Kerr says.

"Although a front is expected to move over the South Island late Tuesday and during Wednesday, it will be weakening, so just some scattered rain later Tuesday in the far south and a couple of showers elsewhere Wednesday and Thursday.

"However, a much more significant front is expected to displace the ridge of high-pressure next weekend, which is likely to bring rain with it. Regions already saturated will be monitoring this situation closely."

Cyclone Dovi hit New Zealand on Sunday, bringing widespread wild weather and causing power outages, flooding and road closures, before abating later in the day. WeatherWatch said the ex-cyclone has since dissolved.

"We still have southerly winds for the North Island but they will ease across the day with showers becoming restricted to eastern regions overnight," the forecaster said in a statement on Monday.

"The week ahead is looking rather settled, we need it after the rough period of weather we have just been through."

WeatherWatch said the new front will move onto the South Island about Saturday.
