Clarke Gayford has poked fun at false rumours he appeared in the Whangārei District Court recently as police say he isn't currently, nor has ever, faced charges.

It appears rumours began circulating online about a month ago that Gayford, who is Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern's fiance, was due to appear in court. Newshub has also received many 'tip-offs' in recent weeks from the public with variations on the rumours.

But there were inconsistencies in the false rumours doing the rounds, with speculators at odds over which court he was purportedly meant to be appearing at. One heard via a "workmate's brother-in-law" that it was Wellington, another thought it was Tauranga, but the majority believed it was Whangārei.

Gayford took to Twitter and had a lighthearted approach towards the rumours.

"Yes but have you ever seen Clarke Gayford and me in the same room at the same time? #justaskingquestions," he wrote.

Police have also responded to the rumours, releasing a statement to Newshub this week saying that while they don't respond to queries asking if certain people are under investigation, "on this occasion we can say that Mr Gayford is not and has not been the subject of any police inquiry, nor has he been charged in relation to any matter".
