The mother of a man missing in the Bay of Plenty has flown from Wales to help search for her son.

David Holland, a 31-year-old doctor from the UK, was last heard from on the evening of March 11.

Holland's friends believe he was intending to go for a swim at Pāpāmoa Beach, but when he never showed up for work a search for the missing doctor began.

His mother, Karen Holland, said she still has hope he will be found.

"We still hope that he will be found safe and well," she told Wales Online. "The authorities are continuing their search. Others enquiries are ongoing. These could take several weeks, if not longer. "

"We would just like to thank everyone for their messages of support at this heartbreaking time and to everyone who has contributed to the fund, it’s been truly overwhelming."

Karen has flown to New Zealand from the Welsh city of Swansea with her other son Rhodri, to meet up with Holland's girlfriend Olivia.

A gofundme account was set up to help the family with travel costs and has raised over £16,000 (over $31,000 NZD).
