Police are promising action against the people responsible for attacking a Waikato milk tanker.

The truck was stopped by a group of people and cars on Orini Road in the early hours of Saturday March 19.

Videos posted on social media showed milk pouring out of the truck as a group of people surround the vehicle. A hammer was used to smash the windscreen.

Police say this behaviour is "unacceptable", and they are "committed to holding the offenders to account".

"If you have any information, video or pictures of the incident that could assist police in identifying those involved please fill out an online 105 report and quote file number 220320/4139," a police spokesperson says.

A Fonterra spokesperson told Newshub the driver is "doing okay" and is being supported.

"We're now working with police to resolve this matter," they added.

The incident has drawn anger online with condemnation for those responsible for the incident.

One person wrote online: "This is disgusting and this is why the car community cops so much heat, you all should be ashamed. I've been to plenty of meets where the truckers don't care and just wanna get [through].

"There's no excuses, sort it out if yall care about our future with cars."
