A police investigation is underway after a milk truck was blocked then damaged by a group of people in the Waikato region in the early hours of Saturday.

Police said the incident happened about 1:20am on Saturday morning near the intersection of Stokes and Orini Rds.

Videos posted on social media showed milk pouring out of the truck as a group of people surround the vehicle. As the driver tries to close his door, he is stopped by the group.

Police said the truck came to a stop where a group of cars and people were blocking the road.

"It is unclear… exactly what happened at the scene and the extent of the damage to the truck is yet to be established," police said in a statement.

The truck driver was not reported injured, police said.

A person in one social video can be heard saying: "there's no need for that shit".

Another person wrote online: "This is disgusting and this is why the car community cops so much heat, you all should be ashamed.  I've been to plenty of meets where the truckers don't care and just wanna get [through].

"There's no excuses, sort it out if yall care about our future with cars."

Police said an investigation into the incident is in its early stages and is ongoing.
