Video has surfaced of a nunchuck-wielding Rotorua liquor store owner chasing down a man who stole a box of alcohol from his shop - and returning with the stolen item.

The incident happened on Saturday at a Bottle-O liquor store on Fenton St, where a man is seen on CCTV footage approaching the counter with a box of RTDs. After a lengthy exchange with the store owner, the man grabs the box off the counter and walks out without paying.

Owner Charanjit Dhillon then took action.

Grabbing a set of nunchucks from behind the counter, CCTV footage shows Dhillon jumping over the checkout shouting, "Oi, oi, oi - come here!" as he runs after the thief.

Dhillon is then seen on the CCTV footage returning back into the store with his nunchucks - and the stolen box of alcohol.

He told the Rotorua Daily Post the thief only made it about 100m down the road before he fell over and his pants fell down.

Dhillon said he's owned liquor stores for 16 years and chased a large number of thieves during that time.

Since he retrieved the stolen box of alcohol, Dhillon told the RDP he didn't report the matter to the police.
