New Plymouth police shooting: Assistant Commissioner says Kaoss Price rammed cop car during incident

Kaoss Price, who was shot and killed by police while they were "conducting a vehicle stop" near New Plymouth, rammed a police car during the incident on Saturday.

Assistant Commissioner Sandra Venables on Monday said the man that was shot and killed by police was Kaoss Price, after the family had confirmed to Newshub he was the victim.

Venables told media at a press conference Price rammed a stationary police car during the incident.

She said at about 9:30pm on Saturday, a police unit conducted a vehicle stop on a car travelling on State Highway 3 near New Plymouth.

Venables said the car that was stopped was being driven by an associate of Price.

"Price was driving a second car in convoy with his associate," Venables said. "While the vehicle stop was being carried out, Price has driven past then turned back and rammed the stationary marked police car."

Venables wasn't able to provide any other information about the incident, saying police had not taken statements from the officers involved and the scene examination is still in progress.

She said karakia was conducted on Sunday evening with whānau and iwi present before Price was removed from the scene.

Venables expects the scene examination to be completed either on Monday or Tuesday.

"We need to make sure that everything was done right," she told reporters.

In an earlier statement, police said the victim was given medical assistance at the scene but suffered critical injuries and died.

An investigation continues into the incident and State Highway 3 from Moutain Rd to De Havilland Dr remains closed while the scene examination is completed - with Waka Kotahi asking locals to delay their journey or use an alternative route.
