More than $12,000 of road signage has been destroyed on a crime spree in the Motueka Valley.

Tasman District Council said nearly every road sign and a number of letterboxes were destroyed along an 18km stretch of the Motueka Valley Highway, between Ngātīmoti and Brooklyn, over the weekend.

Council said the missing signs put road users at risk, especially at night.

They warned of changing road conditions and upcoming stop and give way signs.

Roadworks scheduled for this week will now be delayed as crews reinstate the signs.
