Weather: Strong wind watches, heavy rain warnings issued for all of North Island as ex-cyclone Fili set to hit New Zealand

All of the North Island has been placed under weather warnings and watches with ex-cyclone Fili due to hit New Zealand over the coming days.

Meteorologists warn ex-cyclone Fili will likely bring severe wind and rain risks as the storm re-energises into a bigger low-pressure system. Here are all the warnings in place for the North Island issued by MetService.

Top of North Island

MetService has issued a heavy rain warning for Northland from 8am on Tuesday through to 2am on Wednesday and warns the area could see 100-150mm of rain, with peak rates of 15 to 25mm/h.

"Heavy rain may cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly. Surface flooding and slips are also possible and driving conditions may be hazardous," MetService said.

A strong wind watch is also in place for Northland from 12pm on Tuesday to 12pm on Wednesday.

"Southeast winds are expected to turn southwest on Tuesday night or Wednesday morning, and winds from both directions may approach severe gale in exposed places at times," MetService said.

The weather forecasting company has also issued a strong wind watch for Auckland, Great Barrier Island and the Coromandel Peninsula from 9pm on Tuesday to 9pm on Wednesday.

Auckland and Great Barrier Island will be under a heavy rain watch from 9pm on Tuesday through to 9pm on Wednesday with MetService warning rainfall could approach warning criteria.

East coast of North Island 

A heavy rain warning and strong wind watch are in place for Bay of Plenty, Gisborne and Hawke's Bay.

The rain warning is in place from 9pm on Tuesday through to 12pm on Wednesday with MetService warning residents to expect 130 to 180mm of rain to accumulate.

"Heavy rain may cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly. Surface flooding and slips are also possible and driving conditions may be hazardous," MetService said.

The strong wind watch in place for the same areas is from 9pm on Tuesday to 9pm on Wednesday with MetService saying southeast gales are expected to turn southwest and could approach gale in exposed places.

MetService has issued a heavy rain warning from 6pm on Tuesday through to 9pm on Wednesday and warned locals to expect up to 300mm of rain, which could cause slips and flooding while driving conditions could be hazardous.

A strong wind warning is in place for Gisborne from 9pm on Tuesday through to 9am on Wednesday.

"Easterly quarter gales are forecast to be severe at times, with gusts reaching 120km/h. Please note, that southwest gales are expected on Wednesday, and this warning could be extended," MetService said.

The forecasting company warns strong wind gusts could damage trees, powerlines and unsecured structures while driving may be hazardous, especially for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles.

Hawke's Bay also has a heavy rain warning in place from 9pm on Tuesday to 9pm on Wednesday.

MetService said locals should expect up to 300mm of rain to accumulate, especially in the Wairoa District. Peak with rates up to 35mm/h.

Central to lower North Island

The forecasting company has issued a strong wind watch for the central and lower North Island from 3am to 9pm on Wednesday.

The watch is in place for Waikato, Waitomo, Taumarunui, Taranaki, Whanganui, Manawatu, Horowhenua Kapiti Coast, Wellington, Wairarapa, Tararua District, Taihape, Hawke's Bay and Taupo.

MetService said southwest winds may approach severe gale at times for those areas.
