It has been a sunny start to Easter, with parts of the country in for a fine and settled long weekend, following a week of severe weather from Cyclone Fili.

"As we farewell Fili and hop into the long weekend, there will be lots of fine weather across the country," MetService meteorologist Ashlee Parkes said.

"Friday will be a stunner, apart from a few showers for Fiordland and Rakiura/Stewart Island, then a front moves up the South Island during Sunday."

MetService expects the weather to be more varied around the country on Saturday with wet weather spreading north and windy weather for the Capital.

Weather Watch predicts a mostly dry Saturday in the North Island with some fog predicted in the morning and potentially showers in East Cape up to Northland from the afternoon.

The South Island should enjoy the good weather while it lasts, with Weather Watch predicting a cold front on Saturday expected to push northwards over the South Island bringing rain in the west and showers in the south, but mainly dry for Canterbury with some showers overnight.

MetService has also issued a heavy rain watch for Fiordland between 3 am to 10 am on Saturday morning.

As for Easter Sunday, expect a fine day apart from some cloud and light showers in eastern regions.

"Rain will develop in Northland during Sunday and spread into Auckland and the Coromandel Peninsula late evening," Parkes said. "The rain looks like it spreads farther south over the rest of the upper North Island during Monday, but there is still uncertainty, especially with timing, on who exactly will see the wet weather."

Other regions across the country will see a fine Monday to finish off the long weekend.
