Controversial climate action group The Tyre Extinguishers claims it's started deflating tyres in Christchurch.

After being slammed earlier this month for deflating the tyres of vehicles in Auckland they say are "gas guzzlers", the group said it has spread its actions further down the country.

"The Tyre Extinguishers in NZ have spread from the North Island to the South Island, with reports of SUVs deflated in the suburb of Halswell, Christchurch, New Zealand," a statement from the group said.

According to the statement, tyres were deflated in Luxembourg Cres, Tongariro St, Koareare Ave, Bouma St and Kokoda St.

Tyre Extinguishers spokesperson Marion Walker said SUVs were "killing us".

"Time for citizens to defend themselves and make it impossible to own these killer vehicles in NZ's urban areas."

After deflating tyres on SUVs in Auckland earlier this month, the group left pamphlets outlining why it had taken such action.

According to the pamphlet, the group was taking matters into its own hands because "our governments and politicians will not".

The group claims to have "disarmed" SUVs across the globe including the UK, US and now New Zealand.
