Auckland residents who own SUVs and utes have been targeted by a climate action group deflating their tyres - and the group warns more action is coming.

Tyre Extinguishers has spread out of the UK and begun their action here in Aotearoa, leaving pamphlets outlining why.

The pamphlet titled "ATTENTION - your gas guzzler kills" admitted to deflating the tyres but urged those at the receiving end to not take it personally.

"We have deflated one or more of your tyres, you'll be angry, but don't take it personally. It's not you, it's your car," part of it read.

Auckland resident Conor Roberts told Newshub his neighbours had their tyres deflated.

"I'm all for effective action on climate change, but this isn't the way to go about advocating for it."

The letter left on the windscreen of the targeted vehicles said the group is taking matters into their own hands because "our governments and politicians will not".

"You will have no difficulty getting around without your gas guzzler, with walking, cycling or public transport."

The letter highlighted reports from the United Nations that millions of people are already dying from climate change.

"So far, the impacts on you has probably been minimal," it added.

The group's spokesperson, who identified themselves as a Mercedes Driver, told 1News "SUVs are a climate disaster".

"They cause air pollution and are dangerous for other road users. Everyone hates them, apart from the people who drive them."

The spokesperson added until politicians act, Tyre Extinguishers' action "will continue".

Messages seen by Newshub of the group's communication on the social media platform Telegram claim hundreds of SUVs have been targeted in the UK.

Members claim the group have "disarmed" SUVs across the globe in the UK, America and now here in Aotearoa.

Newshub has approached the group for comment.
