Coronavirus: Latest on COVID-19 Omicron outbreak - Tuesday, May 10

The number of people infected with COVID-19 in New Zealand has now crossed the 1 million mark, with 9173 cases reported on Tuesday.

There are currently more than 55,000 active COVID-19 infections in the community.

But the Ministry of Health said New Zealand's response to the pandemic has contributed to keeping the the country's case numbers low.

"I would like to reiterate my thanks to everyone in New Zealand who has played their part to keep our case numbers and rates low when compared internationally and for continuing to do their bit to follow public health advice and minimise the spread of COVID-19," Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield said.

Another 14 further deaths of people with COVID-19 were announced by the Ministry of Health on Tuesday, taking the total death toll to 826.

Six of the 14 deaths reported on Tuesday were people in their 70s.

As COVID-19 cases continue to mount and with the arrival of the Omicron BA.5 subvariant in New Zealand, epidemiologist Michael Baker has predicted a spike in deaths and hospitlisations in the next few months.

"The more people who get infected, the more who will get serious outcomes, go to hospital and unfortunately die," he told RNZ.
