Roads in Hamilton have been reopened after police destroyed a suspicious package on Sunday morning.

Police said in a statement the cordons in Frankton had been lifted after the package was made safe with the assistance of the NZ Defence Force.

"Police staff remain in the immediate area making further inquiries into the package," the statement said.

Earlier, police said a 100-metre radius has been put in place around Commerce Street in Frankton while they investigate the suspicious package.
