Police are investigating a suspected homicide after a baby died from critical injuries in south Auckland earlier this week.

The infant was taken to the Watford Medical Centre in Otara on Monday. Tragically, while CPR was carried out, the baby was pronounced dead.

A homicide investigation is now underway in relation to the circumstances of the baby's death, said Detective Inspector Warrick Adkin, Counties Manukau CIB.

Police are continuing to speak with residents on Shifnal Drive in the suburb of Randwick Park.

"Police's thoughts are with the baby's whānau," said Det Insp Adkin. "The family have requested privacy at this difficult time."
