Large shark spotted at Auckland's popular Piha beach

A large shark - which some residents believe could be a Great White - has been spotted at Piha Beach.

In the Piha Local Noticeboard group on Facebook, a member posted a warning to the community about the sightings.

The post said, "female Great White has been cruising the beach now for a few days. There are sightings of possibly two of them hanging about".

The shark was last seen on the evening of Tuesday, May 3, by Monkey Rock, which is on North Piha Beach.

The Department of Conversation (DoC) told Newshub on Tuesday its marine expert Clinton Duffy received reports about the shark sightings.

"Clinton Duffy confirms he did receive these reports and while there is a possibility it could be a white shark sufficient information was not provided that would allow us to confirm the reported sightings are of white sharks," DoC told Newshub.
