A 56-year-old Marlborough man has been arrested after he took pictures of teenage girls from social media and altered them with explicit additions.

Marlborough police arrested the man after an investigation revealed the man sexually doctored pictures of teenage girls in the area and then shared the images to adult websites.

Detective senior sergeant Claran Sloan said investigators travelled to Nelson where they found the man.

"This type of crime is extremely upsetting for those affected by it and I am glad we have been able to stop this person from causing more harm."

The man has been charged with digital harm, possession of objectionable material and child exploitation.

He will appear in the Nelson District Court on Monday, May 23.

Police urge anyone who has been affected by this type of behaviour to report it to police on 105 "so police can investigate and hold the offender to account".
