Two rogue zebra crossings have appeared in Wellington tunnels, confusing pedestrians.

The crossings were painted across the Seatound and Northland tunnels.

Wellington City Council's communications advisor Richard MacLean told Newshub they were first alerted to the crossings on Tuesday morning but have no idea how they got there or why someone did this.

"It may have been someone's idea of a joke to do with Harry Potter or Wellington Paranormal."

Wellington residents took to social media to post about the randomly placed crossings.

"They got confused with which end to put it, so the compromise was the middle of the tunnel."

"Another useful crossing approved for the eastern suburbs."

Wellington City Council's Victoria Barton-Chapple said the road markings are illegal and a major safety concern.

"Although we know Wellingtonians wouldn’t be daft enough to think these markings are official and try to cross there, it could result in accidents for drivers who are distracted by them."

Chapple also told Newshub it was an act of stupidity, which takes time and money to fix.

New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi told Newshub that according to Land Transport rules: "a person must not provide or operate a traffic control device on a road without first obtaining approval from the road controlling authority in control of that road."

The council will be water blasting the markings away from the tunnels, starting with the Seatound one at 7:00 pm on Wednesday night and then moving on to remove the Northland one.
