Safe for Animals [SAFE] is calling for a ban on dogs being used to hunt pigs after a TikTok user shared a graphic video of six dogs mauling a "frightened pig".

The short video shows the group of dogs biting and latching onto the pig's head, ears, and neck for over 30 seconds.

SAFE said this isn't the first dog hunting pig video to be shared by the user. Spokesperson Will Appelbe says there are several, and the practice needs to stop.

"Dogs should not be used in pig hunting. It's cruel to the pig and dangerous for the dogs. It's unacceptable and we want to see it banned."

Appelbe said wilful or reckless ill-treatment of a wild animal is an offence but can be defended if it's considered hunting practice.

He questions why these kinds of hunting practices should be considered acceptable.

"We should be well past scaring and torturing animals for fun.

"The fact they then uploaded the footage to one of the biggest entertainment platforms on the planet shows a callous disregard for animals," Appelbe added.

He said when a pig is caught or "bailed" by dogs the hunter should kill the pig quickly.

"The hunter instead filmed the pig and let the dogs maul it."

SPCA confirmed to Newshub they are investigating the video.
