Shallow 3.3-magnitude earthquake rattles Whakatāne

A shallow 3.3-magnitude earthquake has rattled Whakatāne, GeoNet says.

The quake happened 10 kilometres north of the town at 8:10am on Monday and was 5km deep.

GeoNet described the shaking as "light".

The quake was initially recorded at 4.3, but was downgraded.

At the time of writing, 221 people had self-reported to GeoNet as having felt the earthquake. Two said it felt strong, 11 moderate, 92 light and 116 said it was weak. 

Whakatāne also had three other earthquakes on Monday morning ranging from 2.7 to 3.0-magnitudes - all at depths of less than 7km.
