The latest figures show New Zealand's population has continued to increase despite more people leaving than arriving.

The figures by Stats NZ released on Monday cover the period from March 2021 to March this year.

Stats NZ revealed the population has increased and gone just above 5.1 million despite net migration (migrant arrivals minus migrant departures) decreasing by 7300.

The estimated resident population is 5,127,100, which is an increase of 0.38 percent or up 19,200. There are 2,544,700 males and 2,582,400 females in New Zealand and the median age is 37 for males and 39 for females.

Stats NZ said the natural increase, which is birth minus deaths, was 26,400.

The stats showed there were 60,141 live births in New Zealand, an increase from 57,105 last year.

Stats NZ said there were 35,394 deaths, an increase from 32,910 in March last year but it was only slightly up from March 2020 when there were 34,518 registered deaths.

The total fertility rate has also seen a slight increase of 1.68 births per woman this year, up from 1.60. Meanwhile, the infant mortality rate was 4.19 deaths per 1000 live births, compared to 4.15 last year.

The latest figures come after data released in November last year by Stats NZ for the period from September 2020 to September 2021 showed live births were at a six-year high.
