Waka Kotahi has cleared the confusion of many after a Christchurch roundabout left some Kiwi motorists stumped.

The eastern roundabout on Christchurch's Southern Motorway and how road users should drive through it left many confused after one Reddit user shared two different ways it could be used.

The post titled 'Changing lanes mid roundabout?' sparked a large discussion on the social media platform on whether the outer lane should be used when exiting or if it's the inner lane.

One person said the roundabout is challenging.

"There is lines which indicates this but still very confusing, I'm guessing it's there so you don't cut anyone off rather than exiting from the centre."

"Little advise please, because this one has us stumped," another wrote.

"I also don't understand this roundabout at all!" another user said.

Newshub put the confusion and drawing to Waka Kotahi - so they sent their drawings back with how the roundabout should be used.

A Waka Kotahi spokesperson said the drawing above shows the line marking and line directions that people need to adhere to.

"A white spiral has been painted on the inside of the roundabout at State Highway 75 which is designed to encourage motorists who intend to exit the roundabout via the on-ramp to cross the outer lane as they round the top of the roundabout.

"As with any multi-laned roundabout, motorists travelling west from Halswell Road along State Highway 75 need to give way to all vehicles that may cross their path from their right as they enter the Curletts Road roundabout," they added.

They said motorists are "pretty good" at the roundabout and slow down if in doubt.

"They know how it works given it has been in place for more than ten years now."
