While most of the wild weather that hit parts of New Zealand has eased there are still strong wind watches in place in some regions.

Ferocious winds, a tornado and heavy rain battered parts of the country on Friday, with one woman dying after being crushed by a falling tree.

The elderly woman was sheltering from the storm below an old oak tree in Cambridge town square when the winds brought it down, fatally injuring her.

Elsewhere residents of Levin woke up to the aftermath of a tornado that ripped through the North Island town.

Strong gusts closed lanes on the Auckland Harbour Bridge as heavy winds hit much of the country.

While the heavy rain is not forecast to continue over the weekend the strong winds are.

Metservice has issued strong wind warnings that could continue through to Monday afternoon.

A strong gusty cold west to southwest flow will affect New Zealand until Monday and then start to ease on Tuesday.

A strong wind watch has been issued for the Coromandel Peninsula, the Bay of Plenty west of Te Puke, Taupo, and Taihape from 3pm Saturday until 3am on Sunday.  Winds could reach severe gale in exposed places.

More snow is forecast on Sunday across Southland and southern parts of Otago during Saturday. Snowfall is not expected to meet warning criteria at this stage, but could affect higher roads and passes and also cause stress to livestock across parts of the South Island.
