There are 3235 new community cases of COVID-19 in New Zealand on Sunday, the lowest tally of infections in nearly four months.

Another five deaths were reported on Sunday.

The Ministry of Health said 356 remained in hospital with the virus, five of whom were in intensive care.

"Of the people whose deaths we are reporting today; two were from the Auckland region, one was from Hawke's Bay; one was from Nelson-Marlborough and one was from Canterbury," the ministry said on Sunday.

"Today's reported deaths take the total number of publicly reported deaths with COVID-19 to 1406 and the seven-day rolling average of reported deaths is 12."

Sunday's 3235 cases was the lowest figure since February 22, when 2846 infections were recorded.

Overall, New Zealand has reported 1.27 million COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began.
