William is 6'1, of slim-average build, and with dark hair - but his appearance may have been changed.

William's mother shared a post on Facebook on Tuesday and said "we are in desperate need of your help".

"My 16-year-old son Will has run away from home and we are sick with worry."

Mother Caroline said he may have taken the train further up the North Island or even the ferry down South.

"We have no idea where he could be now,

"We believe he intends to go bush so could have camping equipment etc with him," she added.

The police spokesperson confirmed William could be in Wellington, Nelson or the Marlborough areas.
