A drunk driver was caught three times over the legal limit while picking up her grandchildren from school in the Bay of Plenty.

Police said they were called to a report of a vehicle "swerving across College Road" in Edgecumbe on Tuesday.

Staff located the vehicle outside the primary school and approached the driver who was waiting to pick up her grandchildren.

The 58-year-old woman blew an excess breath alcohol reading of 777 micrograms, which is three times the legal limit.

A passenger in the vehicle was also under the influence of alcohol.

The woman is due to appear in Whakatane District Court on 15 June.

Senior Sergeant Tristan Murray urges people to never drive when impaired by alcohol, drugs or fatigue.

'It's not only your life on the line, but everybody else sharing the road with you," he said.

"Another long weekend is coming up, there will be more traffic on our roads and even more reason to ensure we take extra care with our driving and do not take any unnecessary risks.

"All drivers should expect to be stopped by police at any time.

"We want to see everybody taking their safety and the safety of other motorists seriously, to help ensure everyone arrives alive."
