'Toxic smoke' warning lifted for residents in Auckland as firefighters battle large blaze

Firefighters have contained a large blaze in Auckland on Tuesday morning, which saw residents warned of 'toxic smoke'.

Fire and Emergency NZ (FENZ) said the warning for residents of Onehunga, Mangere Bridge and Favona to keep their windows shut and to stay indoors has now been lifted.

"The fire created a potentially toxic smoke plume, which was carried by the wind over the above suburbs but has now dissipated. This was a fourth alarm fire, but has since been scaled back to a second alarm," FENZ said.

"At its peak, there were 20 fire appliances and more than 100 firefighters involved in containing and extinguishing the fire. Currently, four fire trucks remain in attendance, with about 25 firefighters still on the scene."

Incident Controller Brad Mosby said firefighters had done well to control the fire but advised caution due to the potentially toxic smoke plume.

"Our firefighters did a really good job to contain the fire spread in the building," Mosby said.

FENZ said they were alerted to the well-involved industrial building fire in Neilson St in Penrose at 1:55am.

Footage from the scene showed a large number of firetrucks and huge flames being sent into the sky.

Some schools around the fire have been forced to close on Tuesday until further notice because of the blaze.

Te Papapa School on Mt Smart Rd in Onehunga is remaining open but is urging parents to keep their children home, if possible.

Royal Oak Intermediate has issued a notice to parents telling them to focus on keeping their children safe.

"Please do not worry too much about school. Keep yourselves safe and we hope to see your children when they are able to come."

Waterlea School and Māngere Bridge Primary have also been forced to close until further notice because of the blaze

Earlier, FENZ urged residents in the area to keep windows closed and stay indoors if possible because of the fire.
