A magnitude 4.4 earthquake has struck near the top of the South Island.

GeoNet said it had a depth of 10km and was located 15km southeast of Seddon, near Blenheim.

The quake struck at 8:16pm.

Hundreds of people have reported to GeoNet that they felt the earthquake, with the majority saying there was weak or light shaking.

The earthquake was so light that it didn't encourage many to post to social media to say they'd felt it. Many commented on how they didn't feel it, despite seeing reports an earthquake had happened.

Of the few who said they did feel it, one commented that it was "a nice wee earthquake".
