Police have arrested a man after a teenage boy was assaulted in Edgecumbe, Bay of Plenty on Tuesday.

"Police have this evening arrested a 26-year-old man in relation to an assault at Riverslea Mall in Edgecumbe earlier this week," Senior Sergeant Tristan Murray said in a statement.

The teenage boy was violently assaulted just after 5 pm on Tuesday near the toilets of the Riverslea Mall.

He was hospitalised for his injuries but has been discharged and is expected to make a full recovery.

Snr Sgt Murray said the man has been taken into custody and has been charged with injuring with intent to injure.

The man will appear in the Whakatane District Court on June 14.
