A 34-year-old man has been charged with intent to cause grievous bodily harm after a three-month-old baby suffered critical "non-accidental" injuries in Masterton.

He will appear in Masterton District Court on Monday June 20.

The child remains in a critical condition in Starship Hospital in Auckland.

On Saturday, Detective Senior Sergeant Barry Bysouth said police were called to a residential Masterton address on Thursday June 16.

A three-month-old baby was found at the address with critical, non-accidental injuries and was taken to Masterton Hospital then to Starship Children's Hospital in Auckland.

"This incident is traumatic for all involved. An investigation is underway and Police are working hard to determine the circumstances of the assault," he said in a statement.

"An equally important focus for the investigation team is the support of the whānau and baby."

He said the cooperation of the whānau, friends and the wider community was vital to the investigation.

Anyone with information relating to the assault is urged to contact Masterton Police directly or via the 105 number, referencing file number 220617/7497
