More icy weather on way across Aotearoa with temperatures expected to drop into negatives

More icy weather is on the way for much of Aotearoa in the coming days after the country woke to bone-chilling temperatures on Wednesday. 

The coldest part of the country this morning was Omarama, in the South Island, which was a teeth-chattering -10C celsius at 6am - the coldest temperature recorded at a non-elevated weather station this year.

It wasn't much better for the rest of the country with the warmest area being Castlepoint at just 11.7C celsius. 

And it's bad news for summer lovers with more freezing weather on the way tomorrow.

MetService forecasts more cold temperatures on Thursday with Hamilton expected to see a low of just 1C celsius. Meanwhile, Auckland can expect a low of 8C celsius along with Kaitaia and Whangarei which have lows of 10C celsius. Tauranga meanwhile can expect lows of 7C celsius. Temperatures drop significantly further down the island with Rotorua seeing a low of 2C celsius while Gisborne is 3C celsius and New Plymouth is 5C celsius. Additionally, Napier can expect a low of just 1C celsius. 

Taupō is even colder at 0C celsius with Masterton just dropping into the negatives at -1C celsius. 

Palmerston North is also cold with a low of 1C celsius while the capital is slightly warmer on 7C celsius. 

It's a similar story for the South Island with the highest overnight low just 6C celsius in Westport, followed by Franz Josef on 4C celsius and Nelson on 3C celsius.

Meanwhile, Dunedin can expect lows of 3C celsius and Invercargill will be 1C celsius. Blenheim will be chilly with a low of 0C celsius followed by Christchurch which dips into the negatives at -2C celsius. 

Timaru has a bone-numbing low of -3C celsius followed by Queenstown at -5C Celsius. 

However, while it will be another cold start to the day it's better than Wednesday which saw multiple areas of the country waking up in the negatives. 

Christchurch was a chilly -3C while Timaru, while Westport and Invercargill were -2C. In Queenstown, temperatures hit a freezing -4C.

Nelson and Franz Josef were some of the warmest areas in the south on Wednesday morning at 0C, while Blenheim was practically basking in comparison at 1C. Temperatures were slightly warmer in the North Island with Wellington and New Plymouth hitting 8C. 

Napier and Palmerston North were 9C celsius while Masterton was 7C celsius. Meanwhile, Rotorua and Taupō had lows of 4C. 

Hamilton was the coldest part of the north at 0C while Auckland was 7C. Tauranga meanwhile was 6C celsius andWhangārei was 5C celsius. The warmest areas in the country were Gisborne and Kaitaia at 10C. 

The chilly start came after the coldest night across the country and the shortest day on Tuesday.
