New video shows chairs, plates hurled during violent clash at Mt Smart Stadium

A new video of the clash among spectators at the NZ Kiwis v Mate Ma'a Tonga test on Saturday night has emerged, showing more of the violent back-and-forth as attendees threw chairs and other objects at each other.

A video posted on Twitter shows attendees yelling and throwing barstools at each other during the game at Auckland's Mt Smart Stadium. What appears to be dinner plates are also tossed and smashed at people's feet.

What the spectators are shouting at each other cannot be clearly heard.

A separate angle of the clash that was posted to social media on Sunday also showed people throwing chairs and three men climbing from the stands towards the corporate box.

It is still unknown why the fight began.

The clash started in the upper level and then the VIP area, a witness told Newshub on Sunday.

"Someone threw a bottle from there and hit a little girl in the lower level where we were seated," they said.

"The family of that little girl and the Tongans thought it was from [the] VIP area so they [started] yelling and climbing and it escalated from there.

"I moved my kids next to the grass area and kept them there."

Mt Smart Stadium issued an apology to those affected and blamed people in the corporate suites for instigating the attack.

"We are extremely sorry that you and others were impacted by this incident which was initiated by patrons within one of the corporate suites," it said.

"We can assure you all the matter is being taken very seriously. Those involved have been identified and police are involved."

Furthermore, it promised to review both the incident and its current glass policy.

"We have always allowed glasses and glass bottles in our indoor corporate areas. This will be reviewed going forward in light of this incident as the safety of our patrons is of fundamental importance to us."

In a statement to Newshub on Sunday, police confirmed they are making enquiries, following a report of an assault in a corporate box at Mt Smart Stadium.

"One person was transported to Auckland Hospital with moderate injuries," a spokesperson said.

"Police will be undertaking a number of enquiries in the coming days, including interviewing witnesses."
