Newlands shooting: Gang members, armed police officers remain at scene

Gang members remain gathered alongside police officers at the scene of a fatal shooting in Wellington.

A man, believed to have gang links, was shot dead in the suburb of Newlands on Tuesday afternoon after what police said was a "family harm incident".

Police said he attempted to barricade himself and an injured woman inside the Kingsbridge Pl property. A stand-off followed and, after failed negotiations, he was shot dead by police.

It's understood a child was inside the property at the time.

Witness footage supplied to Newshub shows armed police chasing a man back onto the property.

"They're chasing him with guns! They're chasing him with guns!"

Loud gunshots can then be heard.

"Oh my god, they just shot," the woman filming the video says.

King Kobra gang members arrived at the police cordon on Tuesday night and started yelling at police, with one heard accusing officers of shooting at children.

Speaking from Newlands on Wednesday morning, AM reporter Tia McDougall said police officers were still at the scene in numbers.

"I've seen 10 police cars here, up to 15 police officers - many of them armed with large rifles," she said.

"I have seen a couple of [King Cobras] members here again this morning… I've also seen police officers having to escort the neighbours of the house that was fired at out of the street."

An update on the incident has not yet been provided by the police on Wednesday morning.

On Tuesday, police described the shooting as "isolated" and said a "critical incident" investigation had been launched.
