The man shot dead in a police stand off in Wellington on Tuesday has been named.

He was Sam Fakalago.

Police fired "multiple" shots at Fakalago after he allegedly held a woman at knifepoint in a family harm incident on Tuesday afternoon.

Fakalago has not been formally named by police. A spokesperson told Newshub a post-mortem and formal identification process was expected to be carried out on Thursday.

Fakalago's body was removed from the Kingsbridge Place property on Wednesday afternoon.

A police cordon remains in place while a forensic scene examination is ongoing.
