You might want to think again before going on a winter dip in the ocean as high levels of sewage pollution have been found across many Auckland beaches on Tuesday.

According to the Safeswim website, more than 30 Auckland beaches are unswimmable due to a high risk of illness.

The water quality indicator found beaches mainly in the centre, south and west of the city have a very "high risk" of illness from swimming.

Beaches with a "very high risk" include Herne Bay, Home Bay, St Mary's Bay and Te Tinana/Wilson's Beach.

This means there is a "very high risk of illness from swimming" at the spot, due to "recent combined sewer overflow in this area".

Typically, the worst time for water quality is after heavy rainfall as pollutants can get into the sea.

Auckland was hit by a severe thunderstorm that brought heavy rain, strong winds and hail on Monday, closing the Habour Bridge and causing many power outages near the Auckland-Waikato regional border.

The public is urged to check if the conditions are safe at their beach of choice on Safeswim before swimming.
