A security guard sporting a bright orange hi-vis has been employed to guard a brand new bus lane in Bulls after trucks and cars used the new lane as a shortcut.

Rangitikei District Council created pamphlets that are handed out to people who incorrectly use the lane titled "Buses only! This lane is not for trucks. Cars and motorcycles".

Newshub spent the morning at the bus stop and saw two cars and one truck using the lane, one of which was a branded Uzabus car.

The security guard stopped it in its tracks, but it was unclear whether the driver received a pamphlet or not.

"We're actually a bus company, it says Uzabus on the side," the driver told Newshub.

The pamphlet highlights the fact no vehicles other than buses should be passing through the new bus lane. It says those who use the bus lane could face enforcement.

"Other vehicles using this lane can create safety hazards for bus users and the public," it says.

The entrance to the bus lane has new clear signage and road markings outlining that the lane is for "buses only".

Rangitikei District Council said in a statement the lane was not designed for thoroughfare.

"We ask that drivers respect public safety and use public roads for travel."
