Several people are injured after a car crashed into a power pole and caught on fire in Wellington.

Emergency services were called to the serious crash on State Highway 2, Horokiwi, between Wellington and Petone at 4:15am on Friday.

Police said a single car crashed into a power pole and set alight. One person has critical injuries, while another has serious injuries and a third has minor injuries.

The power pole and lines are down and the northbound lane of State Highway 2 is currently closed.

Diversions are in place and the southbound lane remains open.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area or delay travel, if possible.

The Serious Crash Unit will examine the scene and closures may be in place for some hours.

It comes after a deadly month on New Zealand's roads. Last weekend seven people, including a baby, were killed in a horror crash between a van and a truck near Picton. Just days later another crash between a van and a truck killed one person in the same area.
