Two people have been arrested for allegedly using counterfeit money in Auckland on Thursday.

Police were called to a company on Quay Street in the CBD at 7:45am after reports counterfeit banknotes were used as payment.

A police spokesperson said the alleged offenders left the premises before the officials arrived but were monitored travelling south, until they were eventually stopped in Mount Wellington.

They were then taken into custody and are assisting the police with their investigation.

The Reserve Bank has three quick ways for New Zealanders to check if a note is real.

Firstly is to feel the note as a real note should not tear. Secondly, notes are printed to a high standard, so people should make sure the ink looks sharp and not washed out.

Lastly, people should look in the 'window' of the note, as notes contain a hologram effect that you can see changes when tilted in the light.
