While the skills learned in tertiary education are priceless, the costs in both time and money are extensive for every student and can be prohibitive for some. But at New Zealand's network of polytechnics, Te Pῡkenga, they don't have to be.

Founded in 1896, The Universal College of Learning (UCOL) provides vocational education across a diverse range of fields in the regions of Manawatū, Whanganui, Horowhenua, and Wairarapa.

The best part? Many courses won't cost you a cent and can all be shaped to suit your study schedule.

UCOL's mid-year intake starts next month. It includes fees-free courses under the Targeted Training and Apprenticeships Fund (TTAF), a Government initiative aimed at encouraging students into industries where growth is expected and the skills are in high demand.

The fund is over and above the fees free first-year scheme, so don't worry if you've already had your free year or plan to have one in future. TTAF remains free and covers the cost of course fees through till the end of this year.

From the cutting edge of tech to timeless skills forever in demand, TTAF courses cover the breadth of our economy: cyber security experts keeping our digital border secure, nurses on the pandemic's frontline to the tradespeople keeping our essential infrastructure humming.

UCOL lecturers have practical industry experience and are subject matter experts, ensuring their teaching prepares students with the skills they'll need on the job and not just theoretical knowledge.

Executive Dean of Trades and Applied Technology, Danny Reilly says this laser focus on creating competent workers means UCOL can make a commitment to industry partners that graduates are work ready.

"We can put a hand on our heart and say that our students can actually do the work when they enter the workplace for the first time."

UCOL's support goes beyond the classroom and into their workplace, staying connected with students during their first year on the job to provide everything they need to thrive.

"It's really important for many students that we continue to support them well in the workplace. It's often the difference between success and failure," says Danny.

In addition to the fees free scheme being extended through till the end of the year, the Government will also continue supporting employers to take on trainees for in demand jobs throughout 2023. According to Danny, and applauded by Te Pῡkenga, the employer support is an overdue acknowledgement of the key role employers play in furthering students' growth.

"As a society, we expect something from the employer. We expect them to teach them new skills on the job. Now, with UCOL and Te Pῡkenga's support, we embed this opportunity for graduates and my colleagues and I are thrilled the employer is now being recognised for that work with funding support."

UCOL courses are diverse in terms of time commitment. Whether you want to top up your existing credentials or starting from scratch, there will be a diploma, certificate or micro-credential to suit your specific needs and timeframe.

As well as the flexibility in the level of qualification, UCOL will work with you so you can fit your study in and around your existing commitments.

We've all learnt through the pandemic, that our productivity isn't tied to any particular place. UCOL embraces a hybrid education model to enable you to split your time between in person campus learning and studying at home.

Danny says responding to the unique circumstance of each learner helps address a common problem with vocational training – course completion. Students can be tempted to stop their studies the moment they have a job offer on the table.

"One of our values is to be agile and find a way so that people don't give up or discard their studies when they start work. We work with the employer to help the student find a way to carry on their study. For example we can put on an evening class so that they can attend around their work commitments."

Danny says UCOL has always changed its approach to reflect the times, more change is on the horizon. All polytechnics have joined together as a national network, and from 2023 all our students will be enrolled in Te Pūkenga.

"The quality of the education will remain the same. Where you will see change is in the support provided for our learners, and our ability to respond more quickly to industry needs."
