Weather: Heavy snow watch with another front 'waiting in the wings'

A heavy rain watch and heavy snow watch are in place with MetService warning another front is "waiting in the wings".

"Another front moves up the South Island starting tonight and is expected to bring heavy rain to Fiordland and southern Westland, where heavy rain watches are in force," the forecaster said on Facebook.

The Westland heavy rain watch lasts between 6am - 9pm on Monday, and the Fiordland one between 9pm Sunday to 10am Monday. Both may bring possible thunderstorms, and MetService warned the amount of rainfall may approach warning criteria.

This front is expected to bring some snow with it, although not as much as last week's event.

There are road snow warnings in force for Milford and Crown Range roads and the Lindis Pass. Also there's a heavy snow watch for southern Canterbury High Country from Monday night into Tuesday.

Keep up to date with the latest severe weather information at MetService's warning page and check in with Waka Kotahi for road information if you are planning to travel, MetService said.
