Woman caught in crossfire of violent clash at Mt Smart Stadium wants people held accountable

It's been revealed three people were treated for injuries after violence broke out in a corporate area of Mount Smart Stadium, after the Kiwis v Tonga game over the weekend.

A woman who was hit in the face with a bottle during the incident is demanding someone be held accountable.

The stadium hosted a spectacular rugby league homecoming for the Kiwis on Saturday night against Tonga.

But one group in a corporate box attracted attention for all the wrong reasons. Video posted online shows a bottle being thrown into the crowd.

And new footage of the incident posted on Monday shows plates being thrown at people, and a stool being hurled.

Samantha Henry was caught in the crossfire, she's one of three people who required medical attention.

"After the men's game had finished, we just heard a noise behind us and turned around to see what was going on and I was in the wrong place at the wrong time and before I could even see what was happening I got hit with a bottle to the eye."

Collete Tuinauvai Kalolo witnessed the incident and said it kicked off when the Kiwi captain's speech was drowned out by chanting.

She told Newshub the group in the corporate box "threw a can down and the crowd below yelled back angrily", the group then "started throwing whatever they had down at the crowd" including bottles.

"The more video that can be seen by the police, the more chance they've got of actually holding people accountable," Henry said.

Mt Smart Stadium said it's assisting police with their ongoing investigation into what happened there on Saturday night.

The stadium wouldn't front for an interview on Monday but said it's extremely disheartening that a small group of people put a dampener on what was otherwise a fantastic game.

It's now reviewing whether it will continue to allow glass bottles to be served in corporate boxes.

"Knowing that they have bottles in the corporate boxes and not anywhere else, there's nowhere else that bottle could have come from," Henry said.

Saturday's game attracted 27,000 people.

"It was my first-ever game and it was really cool, the cultural things were really cool, and it was amazing, we were so outnumbered by the Tongan supporters, but they were so lovely," Henry added.

A black mark on an otherwise enjoyable evening of Kiwi sport.
