Auckland burglaries: Thieves armed with hammers smash up jewellery store, another group attempts Michael Hill break-in

Thieves armed with hammers have burgled an Auckland jewellery store in broad daylight on Monday.

Officers were called to Tj Handcrafted on Chapel St in East Tāmaki at 2:30pm.

CCTV footage captured from inside the store shows the offenders smashing into the counters and grabbing the jewellery.

Police said the "two unknown males" got away and an investigation is underway to try and locate them.

An investigation was also launched after an attempted break-in at a Michael Hill Store in New Lynn on Monday evening.

At about 6pm, a group of offenders armed with various tools unsuccessfully tried to break into the store at the LynnMall shopping centre, a police spokesperson said.

"The group were unable to gain entry and subsequently fled the scene," police said.

"Minor damage to the storefront has been reported."

Anyone with information about either incident is urged to contact police on 105, quoting file number 220711/2948 for the East Tāmaki burglary and P051200711 for the attempted break-in at LynnMall.

Jewellery store burglaries have been reported throughout Auckland recently, mostly Michael Hill outlets. On Wednesday, multiple men armed with baseball bats robbed another Michael Hill store - this one in Newmarket

Last month, a Michael Hill jeweller was hit in Takapuna in broad daylight - with footage showing two thieves smashing the store's counters before making their getaway past shocked witnesses.
