Armed police surround North Shore house after schools plunged into lockdown, crashed car found abandoned on street

Armed police who surrounded a house in Auckland's North Shore after a series of dramatic incidents in the area have since left the scene, with no arrests made.

Earlier on Thursday, police surrounded a house on Bardia St calling for a person to come out. The incident plunged four nearby schools into lockdown.

In an update on Thursday afternoon, Waitematā East Area Commander Insp Stefan Sagar said investigations are ongoing and there is no immediate threat to the public.

Sagar said officers searched the house and have since left the area.

Photos show at least three police cars and a number of officers were outside the house.

Surrounding streets that were closed have now been reopened and buses are returning to their normal routes.

Police arrest man after car chase nearby

Earlier, a witness said police arrested a man after he crashed a stolen car into the back of one of her neighbour's cars on Devonport's Domain Street while fleeing police.

A police spokesperson confirmed that this was not linked to the incident which put schools into lockdown and the subsequent stand-off on Bardia Street.

The witness told Newshub that at around 9:40am she was parking her car and heard a commotion.

She saw an offender run from the car and through a neighbour's side fence. Unable to get into the house, he then ran across the street into another house but the police ran after him and managed to arrest him and put him in a police car.

She said there were around six police cars on the street.

The witness said a few other cars were "side-swiped" in surrounding streets.

"This was a scary experience, especially for those whose houses he ran into, but thankfully no one was physically hurt."

Waitematā East Area Prevention Manager Inspector Todd Moore-Carter said police have one person in custody following an incident involving a stolen vehicle in Devonport earlier this morning.

At this stage, there are no reported injuries and anyone with information is urged to contact police on 105 quoting file number P051152119.

School lockdown lifted

Bayswater School, Belmont Intermediate, Belmont Primary and Takapuna Grammar School all went into lockdown earlier today.

This is believed to be linked to the Bardia Street stand-off.

Inspector Jason Homan said at the time police were responding to an incident in Belmont following reports of a person with a firearm.

The incident was reported to police at around 10:47am and the Ministry of Education was advised.

As a result, four schools were placed into lockdown for a short period of time.

About a quarter of an hour later after the lockdown, all four schools said the lockdown was lifted and all children and teachers are safe.

"All children are safe and happy. Teachers and students followed procedures well. We are now back to normal," Belmont Primary School posted on Facebook.

In an earlier post, Bayswater School said it had gone into lockdown because of a police incident in the area.

"Bayswater School has gone into lockdown because of a police incident in the area.  We will continue to provide updates as often as possible.

"Please do not come to the school or phone the school as you will not be attended to and this may cause disruption to the management of this incident and could potentially place yourselves and/or our staff and student’s safety at risk.

"We will update you when the lockdown has been completed.  Thank you."

According to concerned parents on Facebook, children were locked in their classrooms and instructed to stay underneath the tables with the windows shut.

Anyone with information that may assist police with their investigation is urged to contact police on 105, quoting job number P051153522.
