A Lincoln University student has been found dead in her room at the halls of residence on the first day of the new semester.

A police spokesperson told Newshub they were called to an Ellesmere Junction Road address, where the university is located, on Monday evening where a female was found dead.

The death is not considered suspicious and will be referred to the Coroner.

According to Stuff, it is believed the student was aged in her late teens and in her first year of study. Police were unable to comment on how long she may have been dead.

Lincoln University had just returned to its second semester following the mid-year break from June 27 to July 15.

Lincoln University Vice-Chancellor Professor Grant Edwards said the university is "deeply saddened" by the death.

"We are deeply saddened by the unexpected death of one of our students in their room at the Halls of Residence at Lincoln University. We are working closely with the family, who has requested privacy, and with our student and staff community."

Lincoln University has seven fully-catered Halls of Residence, all centrally located and owned and run by Lincoln University. Each hall has at least one Residential Assistant (RA) living on-site.
