A man who was shot by police last month in north Canterbury has been charged with multiple offences, including assault.

On June 26, emergency services were called to Williams St in Kaiapoi after reports a man was threatening someone with a metal bar and knife.

On officers' arrival, the man allegedly "attacked the police vehicle with a metal bar", Canterbury District Commander Supt John Price said at the time.

"The man has then made his way to Peraki St where multiple tactical options were deployed including taser and OC spray, which did not affect him."

Price said police fired "multiple shots" at the man, who was critically injured and taken to hospital.

On Thursday, police said the 56-year-old man had since been charged with two counts of assault, threatening to kill, two counts of possessing an offensive weapon, resisting police, being unlawfully in an enclosed area and intentional damage.

Police said the man is now in a stable condition and is remanded in custody until July 25.

The investigation is ongoing and police would still like to hear from anyone who has CCTV or cellphone footage of the incident.

Anyone with information is urged to contact police on 105 and quote file number 220626/7750.
