Person shot, seriously injured by police following 'serious' firearms incident in Auckland's Grey Lynn

A 32-year-old man has been shot and critically injured by police following a "serious" firearms incident in the central Auckland suburb of Grey Lynn.

The armed incident occurred on Wallingford St early on Monday evening.

A witness told Newshub they heard two gunshots just after 5pm and saw ambulance crews treating a patient in an ambulance.

Waitematā Local Board member Graeme Gunthorp told RNZ he heard a dozen shots, followed 10 minutes later by another two shots. He said his neighbour had been shooting at his own house.

Gunthorp also told Stuff his neighbour was known to police, and he had once threatened to kill him because his lawnmower was too loud.

Speaking at a standup on Monday night after the incident, Auckland City District Commander Superintendent Karyn Malthus said police were called after being notified a man "in an agitated state" was standing on the street with a firearm.

She said before police arrived, the man had fired "several shots" from the street at his own home.

"Officers went towards the man and called upon him to put down his firearm. He has however raised it towards the police staff and been shot once."

The man was shot in the abdomen, received immediate medical attention and had been transported to hospital, she said.

"This incident would have been incredibly traumatic for the Grey Lynn community on what would have seemed like an average Monday evening," Supt Malthus added.

"We also want to reassure them that there is no ongoing risk.

"I want to also acknowledge the huge impact this incident will have had on the officers involved. They acted quickly to ensure nobody else was injured and we will be providing them with support."

The Independent Police Conduct Authority will be notified, and a critical incident investigation is underway.

Cordons will remain and a scene guard will be in place overnight.
