The Waimakariri District Council is disappointed after finding graves at the Kaiapoi Cemetery had been damaged last week.

On Friday the council posted on Facebook expressing its disappointment at the damaged grave sites.

The Facebook post said the damage had been caused by people doing burnouts with their vehicles on the grassy areas, within metres of the burial plots.

The post also said several bronze plaques had been stolen as well.

"Sadly, the grass damage was followed by the theft of at least eight bronze plaques from the RSA plots. Council staff are working with Kaiapoi RSA to contact family and work through a resolution."

People also commented on the post as they were also very upset about the incident.

One user said: "That's disgusting, can't believe some people can be so disrespectful."

Another said: "Lower than low, no respect for yourself or any families."

"All incidents have been reported to police and the public are asked if they have any further information or see any suspicious behaviour to report this to police," the council post said.
