It's been a windy start to the week for Aucklanders as severe weather moves in, with cancellations to ferries and the speed limit reduced on the Auckland Harbour Bridge.

MetService issued a strong wind warning for the Super City that came into effect at 5am on Monday and lasts until 2am Tuesday.

The strong winds forced Waka Kotahi to reduce the speed limit along the Auckland Harbour Bridge.

In a tweet, the transport agency warned lane reductions or temporary full closures may occur if gusts hit over 90km/h.

The weather conditions are making it difficult for those who commute by ferry too. Auckland Transport has cancelled all morning West Harbour ferry services to and from the harbour.

A MetService spokesperson told Newshub that exposed areas in the Auckland marine area are seeing gusts exceeding 100km/h.

MetSerivce also issued Auckland with a heavy rain warning from 2am Monday morning until 2am Tuesday.

A low-pressure system bringing rain from the top of the North Island and forcing it south is to blame, the forecaster said.

"It's a wet and windy start to the week across the top of the North Island," MetService tweeted.
